Picnic Day is a much-loved public holiday in the Northern Territory, celebrated on the first Monday in August each year. It offers Territorians a long weekend to relax, connect with their communities, and enjoy unique regional traditions.
The origins of Picnic Day are debated, with two main stories often told:
- The Adelaide River Picnic (1889): During construction of the North Australia Railway, thousands of Chinese labourers were brought to the Territory under indenture contracts. When around 3,000 were released from their bonds in 1889, they were given funds to either return to China or settle in Australia. Many chose to gather at Adelaide River, where they celebrated their newfound freedom with a picnic. Some historians believe Picnic Day commemorates this moment.
- Hart’s Range Races (1946–47): Another theory points to the birth of the Hart’s Range Amateur Racing Club. In 1946, after a day of cattle work at Mount Riddock Station, the Webb brothers and other stockmen held an impromptu horse race back to the yards. The friendly rivalry grew into an organised bush race meeting, and by 1947 the community successfully petitioned for Picnic Day to become an official holiday.
Today, both traditions live on. The Hart’s Range Races have evolved into a major annual event held over the Picnic Day long weekend, featuring not just horse racing but also a rodeo, campdrafting, a dance, BBQs, and plenty of camping. In the Top End, the Adelaide River Railway Picnic continues as a community gathering, keeping alive its historic roots.
In 2026, Picnic Day will fall on Monday 3 August, while in 2027 it will be observed on Monday 2 August.
