What is Recreation Day?
Recreation Day is a special public holiday just for the northern half of Tasmania. It’s all about taking a break, having fun, and maybe getting out to enjoy Tassie’s awesome beaches, parks, or whatever you love doing.
When is it?
- 2025: Monday, 3 November
- 2026: Monday, 2 November
It always happens on the first Monday of November, so mark your calendar for a day off if you’re in northern Tassie!

Oi, mate! So, Recreation Day in Tasmania started ’cause Hobart and the south had an extra holiday, but the north, like Launceston, was missin’ out. No big historical or cultural reason for it, just a way to even things up. It’s mostly a Launceston thing, but other towns in the north get into it too. Back in 1919, they called it the “First Monday of November Holiday” under the Bank Holidays Act. In 1989, they switched the name to Recreation Day, which sounds way cooler.
In 1991, they mucked around with the date and made it November 11th just for that year so it’d line up with the Australian Pacing Championship in Launceston. That’s a horse racing thing where the horses do this special trottin’ or pacin’ while pullin’ a little cart called a “sulky.” Pretty wild!
Now, Recreation Day’s always on the first Monday in November. Everyone celebrates it differently. Some people just chill at home with their mates or fam, doin’ chores or watchin’ telly. Kids like us might hit the books, ‘specially in Launceston, where the uni library’s open for the day.
Heaps of people get into sports, like watchin’ or playin’ Aussie rules footy, cricket, or soccer. It’s nearly summer in November down here, so the weather’s ace for gettin’ outside. Tourists can do whatever they reckon’s fun, ‘cause everyone’s got their own vibe for Recreation Day. Here’s some stuff you could do:
Check out Launceston! The top spot’s Cataract Gorge, with a massive chairlift that goes right across it—super cool. You can also swing by City Park in the middle of town to see some Japanese macaques (they’re monkeys!) or head to the Tasmania Zoo, where they’re tryin’ to save Tasmanian Devils. There’s also the super old Launceston General Post Office, which is like 130 years old, and the Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery for some arty stuff.
Catch an Aussie rules footy game at Aurora Stadium (aka York Park). It’s the biggest stadium in Tassie and can fit 20,000 people goin’ nuts. Or maybe watch the Launceston Warriors smash it in a rugby league match.
Hit up the Aquatic Centre in Launceston. It’s got this huge competition pool with stands for watchin’, plus normal pools, kids’ pools, a water slide, a splash park, a spa, a divin’ tank, and outdoor pools that open around Recreation Day. So much fun!
